There is always a place for unhappiness in a big city. We all know that large megacities are fraught with a lot of bad, even terrible. Chelyabinsk is a typical Russian city, remote from all the turmoil that is happening in the center. But it is in this city and its surroundings that children disappear.
In the center of the story is a seventh grade student named Alex, whose life has changed in a terrible way, literally, in one day. Now he and his entourage are in the center of a mystical tangle that they have to unravel or sink into oblivion forever, like those many who were swallowed up by this city.
