Death means permanent deletion of your save, making every decision matter. You must constantly manage hunger, thirst, fatigue, and body temperature while balancing limited resources and stamina. Use your judgment to explore the wilderness and search for the supplies you need to survive.Explore the Vast WildernessExplore more than 50 square kilometers of remote Canadian wilderness, spanning 12 major regions and the vast areas that connect them. Snow-covered mountains, coastal towns, mines, farmland, and endless winter wilderness create a world filled with uncertainty. Venture deep into the wilderness to search for food, equipment, and other resources that could mean the difference between life and death.Hunting & SurvivalHunt wildlife, fish, set traps, climb, map your surroundings, and scavenge for food and equipment as you fight to stay alive. The wilderness is filled with danger. Wolves, bears, moose, rabbits, deer, and crows can all play a role in your survival, while threats such as hypothermia, frostbite, and dysentery can put your life at risk. You’ll also need to carefully maintain your equipment and make every resource count.Extensive Gear SystemThe game features more than 100 types of equipment and items, including tools, weapons, light sources, medical supplies, clothing, and other essential survival gear. How you acquire, use, and manage these resources will directly determine how long you can survive in the wilderness.Multiple Difficulty ModesChoose from 4 different gameplay modes, ranging from the relatively peaceful Pilgrim Mode to the brutally challenging Interloper Mode, where only experienced survivors are likely to endure for long. If the preset difficulties aren't enough, Custom Mode allows you to customize a wide range of survival rules and create your own unique experience.Challenge ModesTake on a variety of standalone challenges, each typically lasting 1–3 hours, with specific survival objectives to complete. In Whiteout, you must gather enough supplies before a massive blizzard arrives, while Hunted challenges you to escape the relentless pursuit of a deadly bear. Other challenges include Hopeless Rescue, Nomad, Archivist, As the Dead Sleep, and Escape the Darkwalker.WINTERMUTE Story ModeIn addition to its free-roaming Survival Mode, THE LONG DARK also features the chapter-based story mode WINTERMUTE. The game currently includes the first four chapters, offering approximately 30 hours of gameplay, with the fifth chapter currently in development and set to unlock for free upon release.Unlike Survival Mode, WINTERMUTE does not feature permadeath. You can save your progress and experience the full story-driven adventure at your own pace. The game also features a professional voice cast, with music created by composers including Sascha Dikiciyan and Cris Velasco.
